Preview: The Golden Mean (Live)

by Liza Mattimore

Following the success of 2011’s Orpheus and Eurydice (featured in Canadian Stage's 2011.12 season), acclaimed Quebec choreographer Marie Chouinard returns to Canadian Stage with a limited five performance run of her fiery contemporary dance piece The Golden Mean (Live). Originally created for the 2010 Cultural Olympiad and presented as part of the Vancouver Olympic Games with original music by Louis Dufort, the show opened last night at the Bluma Appel Theatre and runs till May 12, 2013 as part of an international tour.

Canadian Stage Artistic & General Director Matthew Jocelyn says, "The Golden Mean (Live) is like nothing we've seen before.”

In math, the “golden mean” is a ratio that both describes and reflects balance and beauty in the cosmos. Chouinard’s work of the same name is an astonishing creation that has left audiences around the world spellbound. From the choreography, music, set and costumes, to the long catwalk that extends into the audience, every element of Chouinard’s new work is a visual surprise. A ten-member dance company, at times hidden behind masks, pays tribute to the poetry of the human body. The masked figure, which varies with each country the company visits, signifies that country’s head of state and political and social organizations. For Toronto’s performances, Prime Minister Stephen Harper will be represented.

“The beings performing on stage will appear to have come from a strange yet friendly future; in an absolutely scintillating acuteness of sensory perception, in which the underlying processes are laid bare, they allow us to listen to our senses in a serene and unprecedented way,” said Chouinard about the production.

On Friday, May 10 at 7:15 p.m., Chouinard will participate in a pre-show chat facilitated by Michael Trent, Artistic Director of Dancemakers, Toronto's second oldest contemporary dance company. Additionally, on May 11, there will be a post-show talkback with members of the company following the 8 p.m. performance. Admission to the pre-show chat and post-show talkback is free with a ticket to the evening’s performance.

The Golden Mean (Live) is on stage now at the Bluma Appel Theatre until Sunday.  (27 Front St. E). Performances run Wednesday through Saturday at 8 p.m. with a matinee on Sunday at 2 p.m. The performance runs 80 minutes with no intermission. Tickets from $24 to $99 are available online, by phone at 416.368.3110 or in person at the box office. For details click here   Hurry or this one will be gone.
