Preview: KAMP

by Liza Mattimore

Witness a day in the life of Auschwitz with KAMP, the work from Dutch theatre company Hotel Modern coming to World Stage May 23-26, 2013. Fusing puppetry with music and film, KAMP is a unique and chilling portrayal of one of the darkest chapters in human history.

A sprawling scale model based on Auschwitz fills the stage. Thousands of eight-centimetre tall hand made puppets populate the camp. Performers manipulate the puppets through their daily activities while miniature cameras project their activities on a huge screen as they struggle to survive. While no words are spoken, atmospheric sound effects and music convey a rich and haunting cinematic experience in the theatre.
